PAT TESTING FAQs

Your PAT Testing Questions, Answered.

Find out what PAT testing involves, how to prepare and what happens after your appointment. For advice about your own equipment, speak to our team.

Employers must maintain electrical equipment so it does not present a danger. That does not mean every appliance must receive an annual PAT test: the checks should suit the equipment and the risks involved.

PAT testing can form part of an equipment-maintenance programme, alongside visual checks and action on defects. A test result alone is not a guarantee that every workplace safety responsibility has been met.

Read the HSE’s explanation of PAT testing requirements. If you need help arranging checks for your premises, explore our commercial electrical services or contact us.

How often should appliances be inspected or tested?

There is no single interval that suits every appliance. The equipment type, how it is used, its surroundings and previous findings all matter when planning checks. Equipment that is frequently moved or exposed to damage may need a different approach from equipment kept in a protected office setting.

Bring any previous appliance records to your appointment and tell us about changes in use or recurring faults. This helps us discuss a sensible approach for your equipment without automatically applying the same schedule to everything.

See HSE guidance on maintaining portable electrical equipment, then ask us about your testing requirements.

What does a PAT testing appointment include?

We agree which appliances are to be covered, inspect accessible plugs, cables and casings, and carry out electrical tests appropriate to the equipment. We then explain the findings and provide appropriate testing documentation.

The work is tailored to the appliance type and condition. Please mention specialist equipment, inaccessible connections or anything that cannot readily be disconnected when requesting a quote, so the scope and practical arrangements can be discussed beforehand.

Our what’s included section outlines the service. For general workplace guidance, see the HSE’s advice on electrical equipment.

How much does PAT testing cost in Cornwall?

We provide a quotation based on your premises and the equipment you need checked. Useful details include your location, approximate appliance count, equipment types, access arrangements and any restrictions on when items can be disconnected.

If you have an existing appliance list or previous testing records, let us know. If you are unsure of the quantity, a rough breakdown by room or work area is a useful starting point; we can discuss what information is needed before confirming the scope.

Request a PAT testing quotation or call 01840 219785. Any additional work should be discussed and agreed separately.

How long does testing take, and will it disrupt work?

The time needed depends on the number and type of appliances, how accessible they are and how your premises operate. We will discuss timing when you book rather than promise a fixed duration before understanding the job.

Items being tested generally need to be taken out of use and disconnected. Tell us about computers, critical equipment or busy periods in advance so we can plan the visit around your needs where possible.

Before the appointment, make the agreed equipment and connections accessible and let staff know which items will be checked. Contact our team to discuss access and scheduling.

What happens if an appliance fails or a defect is found?

We explain the finding and identify the equipment requiring attention. Equipment considered unsafe should be taken out of use until it has been assessed and made safe by a competent person, or replaced.

A testing appointment does not automatically include appliance repairs or replacements. We will discuss the next steps and any additional work separately, so you can decide how to proceed. Please tell us about known damage or intermittent faults before testing starts.

The HSE’s electrical equipment guidance explains the importance of condition checks. For faults involving the building’s electrical supply, see our commercial electrical services.

What records will I receive after testing?

We provide clear results and appropriate documentation for the agreed work, highlighting equipment that needs attention. If you need a particular reporting format, appliance-reference system or records for a managing agent, please raise this when requesting your quotation.

Keep the information with your equipment-maintenance records so previous findings can be referred to when planning future checks. Records and labels are useful management tools; the HSE does not describe them as a universal legal requirement for every tested appliance.

Read the HSE’s guidance on PAT records and labelling, or discuss your documentation needs with us.

Is PAT testing the same as an EICR?

No. PAT testing concerns electrical appliances and equipment, while an Electrical Installation Condition Report assesses the property’s fixed electrical installation, such as wiring, circuits and distribution equipment. Booking one does not automatically include the other.

For example, a business may need to consider both the condition of its appliances and the installation supplying them. Tell us whether you need appliance testing, an installation inspection or advice about both, so the quotation covers the right work.

Visit our EICR testing page for installation inspections, or our domestic electrical services page for work in your home.
